Tanguiéta, next to Pendjari Park, is under heavy pressure on its natural resources. Sacred forests such as Finfingou are now under threat, making conservation action an urgent necessity.

The local context

Tanguiéta is a commune in northwest Benin's Atacora department. Tanguiéta is close to the Pendjari Biosphere Reserve, one of the largest protected areas in West Africa.

Pendjari National Park is a protected area covering the communes of Tanguiéta, Matéri and Kérou, on the border with Burkina Faso. It is part of the Pendjari Biosphere Reserve (PBR), created in 1986, which includes the park, hunting zones and a buffer zone between neighboring villages and the park. It is on Benin's list of protected areas.

Reforestation

Since 2021, Humy has enabled the creation of a nursery producing between 4 and 5,000 trees a year. The nursery is located in an elementary school. Pupils are made aware of the importance of protecting nature at an early age. The sale of the trees improves the income of the teachers who also look after the nursery.

Results obtained : More than 20,000 local trees have been replanted

The craft industry

Since 2021, Humy has enabled the development of the craft industry in 5 villages located in Phnom Kulen. Skills in weaving, braiding and cutlery are held by elderly people. The project aims to develop the craft industry, generate income for these people, raise awareness among younger people and train new craftsmen.

Results obtained : The sector has been structured, a person has been hired to develop relations with craftsmen, training courses have been held in elementary school and a development plan has been created.
